Understanding Immigration: Visitor Visa

Anyone wishing to visit Canada on a temporary basis from a visa-required country must apply for a temporary resident visa (visitor visa) OUTSIDE of Canada.*

Applications can be made either online or by paper. Sometimes, the processing times are faster with one method over the other. Processing times are updated regularly on IRCC’s website.

The application itself is rather straightforward as there are only a few forms and is low in cost. The support and evidence, however, are crucial for these applications and can be quite challenging as the applicant must satisfy the officer that they will leave at the end of their stay.

Upon being granted a visitor visa (TRV), you may travel to Canada. Most visitor visa holders will be granted visitor status for up to 6 months at a time.

*The only exception to this rule is for an individual inside Canada who holds a work or student permit and wishes to stay in Canada on a temporary basis, but no longer qualifies for a work or student permit.
