Understanding Immigration: Super Visa

In 2011, IRCC launched the Super Visa (aka parents and grandparents extended stay temporary resident visa) allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit for up to 2 years at a time over a maximum of a 10 year period. Those from visa-exempt countries wishing to stay for up to 2 years while visiting their children and grandchildren will also need this visa.

Applications can be made either online or by paper, although applying online is encouraged.

With this visa, there are medical and financial obligations that differ from the visitor visa (TRV) we looked at last week. An upfront medical exam Is required, as is medical insurance and the relative(s) in Canada must prove they meet the low income cut-off as well as sign a letter of invitation promising their financial support for the entire duration of the visit.

Processing times vary by country and are particularly lengthy at this time. If you’re looking to reunite with your family post-pandemic contact us to see if you qualify and how working with us can help you to present a stronger application.
